Southern Potteries, Inc.
Two 8.25" Salad Plates,
A pair of colorful 8.25" salad plates made by Southern Potteries Inc (Erwin, Tenn), in a blue and green spongeware pattern called "Grape Salad." The hand-painted designs shows a luscious cluster of blue grapes in the center, surrounded by green leaves and lines, with a sponge border on the beaded Candlewick rim.
These plates have a "diamond" mark for SPI and Erwin, Tennessee, which I believe dates it to the 1940s. The underglaze back stamp reads "Hand Painted Underglaze / S.P.I. / Erwin, Tenn. / Made in U.S.A." (see closeup photo at top of listing).
One plate is in good to very good condition, with just a couple of fine utensil marks. It has some firing marks on the underside, which have darkened or browned a bit, but no crazing, chips, or cracks.
The second plate is in fair condition. From the front, it looks very good, with just a bit of visible crazing and light utensil scratches. But the back side reveals two large chips on the underedge of the rim, heavier crazing on the sides, and a stress crack in the center (does not penetrate to the front).
