Beautiful 1920s Square Mug-Shaped Vase
from Coronet, Czechoslovakia
Hand-Painted Red Poppy Design
A very pretty bright red and green mug-shaped vase with red trim around the rim and handle, from the former Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). The design is the colorful, hand-painted red poppy. It has the registered mark for Coronet, with is an importer's mark used by Borgfeldt Co. of New York (I believe this dates to the 1920s). I thought at first it was just a mug, but realized the way the neck narrows would make it very difficult to drink from, so I think perhaps it is intended to be used as a vase.
This pretty piece measures 3.75 inches high at the top of the rim, 4.25 inches at the top of the handle, 3 inches wide across the rim, and 3.25 inches wide across each side. There is one very tight hairline crack (about 3/4 of an inch) on the rim (more visible on the inside than out, see closeup photos), with no other chips, cracks, or crazing.
The piece is marked with a wreath and crown mark for "Trade Mark / Coronet / Czechoslovakia registered." There is also an incised under-glaze number 2057.
