1914 Calendar Plate
Greetings from Kinsey Bros.
This very pretty but worn calendar plate is made by the D.E. McNichol Pottery Co. of East Liverpool, Ohio. This antique plate has a colorful center design that says "Washington's Tomb." It is surrounded by the months of the year for 1914; each month is separated by bunches of blue flowers or red fruit, and the embossed rim has a scalloped shape with gold trim. As you can see in the photos (some with flash, some without), the color and print is still very nice and clear.
This whiteware plate measures 8-3/8 inches wide. It is in fair condition. There is overall heavy crazing, but it has not darkened or turned brown. There is also one shallow but visible chip on the rim (at 8:00 in the photo). On the backside, the crazing is more coarse, threatening to form a crack in one spot (but it passes the thumbnail test; there is also a glaze squiggle on the back that looks like a crack, but isn't).
The plate has a red mark for "Carnation / McNichol." There is a second gold stamped mark that reads "1914 Greetings from Kinsey Bros." (Unfortunately, google hasn't helped me find out what the Kinsey Bros. did; there does seem to be a business in Newark, NJ, that went by this name during this time period.)
